The Maine Civilization Cluster — A Portfolio of 51 Interconnected Enterprises

A Private Invitation

Fifty-One Enterprises. One Architecture. One Enduring Purpose.

The Maine Civilization Cluster is a founding-stage architecture of interconnected commercial enterprises, permanent-capital companies and traditional Catholic nonprofit institutions conceived not as separate undertakings, but as a single system.

To Jesus Through Mary · Light in the Storm

Not fifty-one independent ventures.

The enterprises of The Maine Civilization Cluster are designed to reinforce one another economically, technologically, physically and institutionally.

Some exist to serve permanently. Some exist to own permanently. Some create recurring financial capacity. Some build strategic infrastructure. Others are intended to create extraordinary enterprise value through technology, manufacturing, intellectual property and category creation.

What connects them is not industry. It is institution building.

A Berkshire Hathaway discipline.
Built from the ground up.

The governing financial philosophy draws deliberately from Berkshire Hathaway: disciplined capital allocation, decentralized operations, protection of durable competitive advantages, reinvestment of earnings, long-term ownership where warranted, and the compounding of value.

The comparison has limits. Berkshire Hathaway became what it is largely by acquiring established businesses with proven economics. The Maine Civilization Cluster is predominantly a venture-creation and institution-building system.

Many of its enterprises must be conceived, financed, built and scaled from the ground up. Some may ultimately be sold. Some may reach public markets. Some may become more valuable as permanent holdings.

The objective is to give fifty-one very different enterprises the benefit of a Berkshire-like capital allocator and permanent institutional architecture above them.
CREATE → BUILD → SCALE → HOLD OR MONETIZE → RETAIN VALUE → REALLOCATE → BUILD AGAIN

Six capabilities built once for the entire portfolio.

Rather than requiring individual companies to recreate foundational institutional capabilities independently, the Cluster places six permanent-capital and ownership functions above the operating portfolio.

Stella Maris Holdings, LLC

Principal parent and capital-allocation entity, designed to direct ownership and capital across the portfolio according to opportunity, return, strategic importance and timing.

Stella Maris Intellectual Property Holdings, LLC

Designed to own, protect, manage and license patents, software, trademarks, proprietary systems, designs, data rights and other intellectual property developed throughout the Cluster.

Stella Maris Development Company, LLC

Shared development, construction, real-estate and infrastructure capability for the physical enterprises and institutions of the Cluster.

Stella Maris Insurance and Float Generator, LLC

Intended, subject to licensing and regulation, to develop disciplined insurance operations capable of producing long-duration investable float.

Stella Maris Talent Company, LLC

Recruiting, executive search, workforce development, training and human-capital capability shared across the portfolio.

Aroostook Universal Asset Bank, Inc. (AUAB)

Intended, subject to chartering, capitalization and regulatory approval, to provide treasury, custody, asset management, settlement and institutional financial infrastructure.

Fifty-one enterprises. Different financial destinies.

The Cluster does not impose one economic outcome on radically different enterprises. Some are intended to generate recurring cash flow. Some may be sold. Some may ultimately reach public markets. Some may be retained because their long-term strategic value exceeds their sale value. The nonprofit institutions are intended to endure.

Investors participate in what they own.

The charitable mission of The Maine Civilization Cluster and the economic rights of outside investors are deliberately separated.

An outside investor's ownership is governed by the terms of the specific enterprise in which that investor participates. Where an enterprise produces a sale, acquisition, recapitalization, public offering or other liquidity event, the investor participates according to the ownership and contractual rights attached to that investment.

The permanent support of the Cluster's nonprofit institutions is intended to come from value belonging to the Cluster itself: ownership interests, operating profits, investment returns, intellectual-property income and liquidity proceeds belonging to entities established for that purpose.

The Cluster gives from what the Cluster owns.

The companies are built to create value.
The institutions are built to endure.

Commercial success is not intended to be the final destination of the architecture. Over time, the objective is to convert a portion of the value belonging to the Cluster into permanent capital supporting Catholic institutions designed to continue their work long after the original founders, executives and investors are gone.

The individual enterprise matters.

But the compounding system is the strategy.

The story is fiction.
The architecture behind it is not.

The Maine Argument, a novel by Eric Coley, grew alongside the same question that produced The Maine Civilization Cluster: what happens when inherited structures cease to be treated as inevitable and people decide to build differently?

The Maine Civilization Cluster is a founding-stage undertaking. The enterprises and institutions described are proposed and in development. Entities have not necessarily been formed, capitalized or commenced operations. Financial figures, development schedules and other projections are planning estimates and are not guarantees of future performance. Nothing on this site constitutes an offer to sell or a solicitation of an offer to purchase securities.
